The Hard is What Makes it Great

There’s a great moment in one of my favorite movies, A League of Their Own in which Geena Davis’s character, Dottie, wants to quit the baseball team. Its manager, Jimmy Duggan (played by Tom Hanks) a former pro ball player confronts Dottie after she says baseball is “too hard”. Duggan riffs “The hard is what makes it great.”  A career in communications can often present similar challenges – tight deadlines, managing client needs, supporting your team – but the great is the shared goal and the victory when your ideas come to life.

Life has a unique way of challenging and surprising us at inopportune times (is there ever a good time?) in our career journey. The Great Recession of 2008 ended up as one of those moments for many – and served as the jolt I needed to start a business the following Spring.

The ethos that founded KCD PR in 2009 very much rings true today – providing highly specialized strategic communications counsel in a specialized construct. As someone trained and brought up working in big agency environments, the experience working on that side and the client side helped fuel this idea. Clients want specialists who know their space well, can serve as a trusted partner and can provide a level of personalization that only a boutique firm can provide. That’s the model – it’s simple, requires evolution and embracing new technology on a path for continuous improvement.

It’s why fifteen years later, KCD PR is recognized as one of the leaders in our industry. It’s taken a ton of blood, sweat and tears but I wouldn’t trade it for anything. Thank you to the hundreds of clients over the years (especially the OG crew) who took a chance on us. We’re proud of every project, every awesome result, and the fun stories along the way. Thank you to our team – past and present – without your contribution, this wonderful place to work and vision doesn’t take flight. So many friends, partners and connectors helped along the way as well – thank you for the introductions, referrals, kind words and motivation. This is what running a growth business is all about

So, happy 15th birthday, KCD PR fam! Our firm will always be out there as a forward-thinking, agile agency ready to serve our clients’ needs. There’s more to come – complacency isn’t in our DNA. Thank you again and I’m excited for what the future holds for KCD PR.
